Noise Impact Assessment
The noise sources typically associated with shopping centres include vehicle movements in carparks and along access roads, loading dock activities, mechanical plant and equipment, patrons and entertainment. As shopping centres can operate during the night-time and/or require late-night or early-morning deliveries, the control of noise emissions can represent a big problem if the design constraints imposed by night-time operation are not considered early on in the design process. For example, the noise from a poorly oriented loading dock can be impossible to adequately attenuate to meet night-time design criteria.
Fit-Outs and Plant Noise Control
Generally, retail fit-outs require minimal design input from an acoustic engineer. The exceptions are food and beverage outlets where patron noise can be an issue and specialist retailers where a high level of speech intelligibility is required during retail transactions. Acoustic design advice for the amelioration of plant and equipment noise emissions must be obtained as early as possible in the design process to ensure that noise control measures such as acoustic barriers or enclosures are feasible. In many instances, selecting low-noise plant and equipment, positioning them away from noise-sensitive premises and modifying how they operate during the night-time can reduce or remove the need for expensive acoustic barriers and enclosures.
The Director of SoundBASE Consulting Engineers, Michael Hayne, has prepared noise impact assessments for shopping centres and provided design advice for retail tenancies and plant noise control for a number of projects, including:
- High Street Plaza Redevelopment, Toowoomba
- Bridge Street Village, Toowoomba
- Hungry Jack's Restaurant, Meadowbrook
- Kawana Shoppingworld Stage 4, Buddina
- Raine Square Redevelopment, Perth
- KFC Restaurant, Beenleigh
- Tenancy Fit-out, Ellaways Music, Underwood
- Rooftop Plant, Coles Silkstone, Newtown
- Rooftop Plant, IGA Marketplace, Greenslopes
